How this car cost calculator works

Depreciation is your purchase price minus the resale value, divided by the years you keep the car. Fuel is miles per year divided by MPG, times the price per gallon. The rest are yearly amounts you enter. Add them up and you get your annual cost of ownership, then we divide by 12, 365 and your yearly miles for the monthly, daily and cost per mile figures.

Common questions

What is the average cost to own a car per year?

AAA's 2026 Your Driving Costs study found an average of $12,863 a year for a new vehicle driven 15,000 miles. Used cars usually cost less to own because they have already lost much of their value.

How do I calculate cost per mile?

Divide your total yearly cost of owning the car by the miles you drive in a year. The calculator does this for you.

How much does it cost to drive 100 miles?

Divide 100 by your car's MPG, then multiply by the price of a gallon. At 28 MPG and $3.50 a gallon, that is about $12.50 in fuel. The "fuel for 100 miles" box shows yours.
