Gas vs Hybrid vs Electric Car Cost Calculator

Wondering whether a hybrid or an EV really saves money? Enter the prices and efficiency for each car to compare the total of purchase price plus fuel over the years you will own it.

Gas car: price plus fuel
Hybrid: price plus fuel
Electric: price plus fuel

How the numbers work

For each car we add the purchase price to the yearly fuel cost times the years you keep it. Gas and hybrid fuel cost is miles divided by MPG, times the gas price. Electric cost is miles divided by miles per kWh, times your electricity price. The starting values are examples, so enter the real prices and efficiency ratings for the cars you are considering. The government site fueleconomy.gov lists ratings for most models.

What it leaves out

Insurance, maintenance, tax credits, home charger installation and resale value can all change the picture. For the full cost of one car, use the car ownership cost calculator. Read more: Hybrid vs. gas car: which is cheaper to own?
