How to decide whether to repair or replace

This calculator adds up what you would spend over the same stretch of time either way. Keeping the car costs the repair now plus the other repairs you expect each year. Replacing costs the monthly payments plus upkeep on the newer car. Use a real quote and be honest about how much more the old car is likely to need.

A popular rule of thumb says to think hard about replacing when a repair costs more than half of what the car is worth. It is a guide, not a law, so use it alongside the numbers above.

What this leaves out

It compares cash you would spend over the same period. It does not count the value of owning a newer car at the end, insurance changes, or sales tax and fees on a replacement. If the result is close, those could tip it. Read more: Is it cheaper to repair or replace an old car?
